believe I am a professional learner of new professions. For many years, I was a concert pianist and choral conductor. I played lots of solo and chamber music. I also worked as an assistant conductor at the Moscow Academic Stanislavsky Opera and taught the piano at the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute.
In the early 1990's, I became a writer and journalist. I wrote a book "Russian Folk Songs: Musical Genres and History," which was published in 2002 by Scarecrow Press. I have written cover and feature articles to The Guardian (London), Parade Magazine, Air&Space/Smithsonian, Playbill, The Moscow Times, Gramophone Online Magazine, etc. I worked as a features writer and classical music critic for various daily and weekly newspapers in Connecticut where I lived before moving back to New York.
Approximately at the same time, I began to compose. My choral compositions and arrangements of Russian vocal compositions and folk songs have been published by Oxford University Press, Hal Leonard, EC Schirmer, and Musica Russica. EC Schirmer published five of my choral pieces in 2009.
In the early 2000's, I decided to find the art equivalent of musical motion. So I became an artist. My most recent exhibition was in March 2013 at the Museum of Russian Art in Jersey City, NJ. I have participated in group exhibitions in New York City and Connecticut, and my paintings sold to private collectors in New York, Washington and Connecticut. My art has involved the creation of abstract paintings in which musical forms, melodies, harmonies, textures, dynamics and tempos are all inspiration for my work. My palette follows the principle of contrast and repetition -- the paramount principle in musical compositions. The most important influence on my art is my work as a classical composer. It gives me the understanding of the architectural aspect of art. Thus, I attempt to both create a connection between art and music and at the same time transcend the boundaries of these two cultural mediums. This is why I call my art "Visual Music."
